If you are installing a new concrete patio for your home, you should know that this can add value to your home and also give you and your family a place to enjoy spending outside. One thing you must do is learn how to keep the concrete patio in good shape. Keep reading for two tips on how you can do this.

Keep It Clean

One of the most important things you should do is keep the concrete patio clean. This will keep the concrete in good condition and prevent it from eroding from weather elements. If this happens you would have to pay to have the patio repaired, which can be costly. Dirt and other debris should be cleaned regularly to prevent erosion, which can start out as small cracks or holes and turn into much larger cracks and holes over time.

Sweep the patio at the end of each day if you use the patio daily. Use a pressure washer to clean the patio when you notice it becomes dirty. If you do not have a pressure washer, you can use a regular garden hose with a concrete cleaner to clean the patio. If someone spills something on the concrete, clean it up as fast as you can before a stain starts to appear. Keeping the concrete clean will also allow you to see if there are any cracks or holes so you can repair these things before they become much worse.

Seal the Concrete

Apply a sealant to the concrete patio to keep it in good condition. This will also help preserve the concrete, especially if you have stamped concrete. You can purchase sealer at a home improvement store and do this job yourself. This is especially true if you have a small patio. The sealer that you purchase will come with complete instructions on how to apply it. In most cases, however, it is either rolled or brushed onto the concrete in an even coat. Let the first coat dry then apply a second coat.

As soon as you notice the sealer is wearing away you should reapply it as soon as you can. This will prevent the color from fading if you have colored concrete or stamps. Make sure you speak with the contractor that installs your concrete patio to learn what type of concrete you have so you know the right type of sealer to purchase.
